Dr P K Seth, CEO, Biotech Park, Lucknow, On setting up of a DNA bank in the biotech parkThe biotech park is set to start a DNA bank soon. What kind of bank will it be and what will be the facilities provided?Biotechnology is an upcoming field now and this bank will be unlike the others being opened by the biotech companies. It will be a bio-lab providing various kinds of services like gene sequencing etc with greater emphasis on research.
With the opening of this bank, our knowledge about the effect of drugs and chemicals on the human body will improve.
What kind of DNA research work will this bank undertake. Will it be similar to the one conducted at the CDFP, Hyderabad? The kind of DNA finger-printing done in Hyderabad is applicable for forensic purposes and is very useful in solving cases of paternity dispute or murder. This is going to be very different from that. The kind of research undertaken here will provide answers to basic queries like why are people susceptible to a particular kind of drug. So our knowledge of human responses to drugs and chemicals will be much better.Although Lucknow is already known as a science city, this will be the first biotech lab in the city. Do you think that the establishment of such a research institute will increase the prospects of biotechnology in the city? The lab will help improve biotech facilities in Lucknow as well as the state. Since biotechnology is an upcoming field, it will help to increase the flow of research workers towards the city as well, besides augmenting the research base and manpower. It will not only add to our knowledge base, which I believe is second to none, but will also attract more and more people towards this field, especially from the northern parts of the country. Although all the facilities required will take some time to develop, it is possible that in the future, this lab is used for forensic purposes as well, although it is still too early to say that.
